At Big Bend Ranch, every hunt takes place on land that has a story to tell. While today our guests come from across the country to experience some of South Dakota’s finest pheasant hunting, the prairie they walk has been an important part of American history for centuries.
Our primary hunting grounds are located along the historic Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, the route commemorating the famous 1803–1806 expedition that explored the newly acquired Louisiana Territory. As Meriwether Lewis and William Clark traveled the Missouri River, they documented the landscapes, wildlife, and Native cultures that helped shape America’s understanding of the western frontier. Today, visitors to Big Bend Ranch have the rare opportunity to hunt the same rolling prairie overlooking the Missouri River that Lewis and Clark witnessed more than two hundred years ago.
The history surrounding our ranch extends even further. The site of our newest lodge is located just steps from Cedar Island, the location of South Dakota’s first permanent fur trading post. Established during the early years of the American fur trade, Cedar Island became an important gathering place where traders, Native American tribes, explorers, and frontiersmen exchanged goods and helped shape the development of the region. Long before highways and modern communities existed, this stretch of the Missouri River served as one of the area’s most important transportation and commerce corridors.
Today, that same landscape remains remarkably unchanged. The native grasslands, shelterbelts, river breaks, and agricultural fields that provide outstanding habitat for wild pheasants also preserve the natural beauty that attracted explorers, traders, and settlers generations ago. Standing on the ranch, it’s easy to imagine what this country looked like during the earliest chapters of South Dakota’s history.
